Are sun- and shade-type anatomy required for the acclimation of Neoregelia cruenta? Anais da ABC (AABC)
REINERT,FERNANDA; LEAL-COSTA,MARCOS V.; JUNQUEIRA,NICIA E.; TAVARES,ELIANA S..
Sun and shade plants are often discriminated by a number of sun- and shade-type anatomies. Nonetheless, we propose that among tank-bromeliads, changes in rosette architecture satisfy the requirements for coping with contrasting light levels. The tank-bromeliad Neoregelia cruenta naturally colonises sub-habitats ranging from full exposure to direct sunlight, to shaded environments in sand ridge plains. We quantified anatomical and morphological traits of leaves and rosettes of N. cruenta grown under sun and shade conditions. Cells with undulated lateral walls within the water parenchyma are for the first time described for the family. Under high light, leaf blades were wider, shorter, and yellowish. The rosette diameter of sun plants was less than half that...

Notes on the distribution, habitats and morphology of Stylaster roseus (Pallas 1766) (Hydrozoa: Stylasterina) in the Colombian Caribbean OceanDocs
Sanchez-M., Juan A.; Navas-S., Gabriel R..

Populational Diversity on Leaf Morphology of Maté (Ilex paraguariensis A. St.-Hil., Aquifoliaceae) BABT
Coelho,Geraldo Ceni; Mariath,Jorge Ernesto de Araujo; Schenkel,Eloir Paulo.
Maté (Ilex paraguariensis A. St.-Hil.) is a native plant from southern Brazil and a raw material for beverages. To research on population variability of the species, we compared leaf morphology of three populations from Mato Grosso do Sul (MS), Paraná (PR) and Santa Catarina (SC) States. Lamina measurements included area (A), perimeter (P), length (l), maximum width (w), distance between maximum width and lamina base (dw), base angle (BÂ), biomass (m), and the indexes: relative distance of maximum width (dw/l), ratio length/width (l/w), relative perimeter (RP= P / (l + w), rectangular area index (RAI = A / (l x w)) and leaf mass/area (m/A). We verified differences among populations on A (MS<PR=SC), l (MS<PR=SC), w (MS<PR=SC), RAI (MS=PR>SC) and...

Somaclonal variation in Asparagus officinalis plants regenerated by organogenesis from long-term callus cultures Genet. Mol. Biol.
Pontaroli,Ana Clara; Camadro,Elsa Lucila.
Somaclonal variation in plants regenerated by organogenesis from long-term cultured calluses of two diploid staminate genotypes of Asparagus officinalis cv. Argenteuil was characterized by plant phenotype, ploidy, meiotic behavior, pollen viability, fruit and seed set, and AFLP profiles. Phenotypic deviations from the donors were detected in foliage color, flower size, and cladode and flower morphology. Ploidy changes were observed in 37.8% of the 37 regenerants studied. Meiotic alterations in 12 out of 21 regenerants included laggards, dicentric bridges, micronuclei, restitution nuclei and polyads. Of the 408 AFLP markers screened in 43 regenerants and the donors, 2.94% showed polymorphism. High pollen viability was observed in the 22 regenerants...

Tiller size/density compensation in grazed Tifton 85 bermudagrass swards PAB
Sbrissia,André Fischer; Silva,Sila Carneiro da; Matthew,Cory; Carvalho,Carlos Augusto Brandão de; Carnevalli,Roberta Aparecida; Pinto,Luiz Felipe de Moura; Fagundes,Jaílson Lara; Pedreira,Carlos Guilherme Silveira.
The objective of this study was to evaluate the occurrence of the tiller size/density compensation mechanism in Tifton 85 bermudagrass swards grazed by sheep under continuous stocking. Treatments corresponded to four sward steady state conditions (5, 10, 15, and 20 cm of sward surface height), maintained by sheep grazing. The experimental design was a complete randomized block with four replicates. Pasture responses evaluated include: tiller population density, tiller mass, leaf mass and leaf area per tiller, and herbage mass. Tiller volume, leaf area index, tiller leaf/stem ratio, and tiller leaf area/volume ratio were calculated and simple regression analyses between tiller population density and tiller mass were performed. Measurements were made in...

Variation in root morphology of epiphytic orchids along small-scale and large-scale moisture gradients Acta Botanica
Einzmann,Helena J. R.; Schickenberg,Nina; Zotz,Gerhard.
ABSTRACT Root morphology is expected to respond to environmental conditions. Two earlier studies reported predictable changes in the structure of the velamen radicum (common in monocotyledons) along rainfall gradients, which was expected from its assumed role in plant-water-relations. The present study expanded on this idea by analysing nine root traits that can be linked to root function, including velamen structure, along two moisture gradients of different spatial scales: 1) along the vertical gradient of a lowland forest in central Panama and 2) along a strong regional rainfall gradient in western Panama. All studied traits (e.g. velamen width, number of xylem poles, lignification of the exodermis) of the 45 orchid species showed substantial...
